Kids Run

Our original Kids Run the MDI Marathon program encourages a positive relationship with physical activity and cuts down on screen time by utilizing a real running log and rewarding significant milestones with certificates of achievement. This program, as our team has designed it, is so popular that other races have even started adopting it for their own!

Kids Run Overview

Hey KIDS! Are your ready to RUN a MARATHON?

Here's how it works: After a parent or guardian officially registers for you to participate in the KIDS RUN the MDI Marathon, you will start running!

A marathon is 26.2 miles. You will run and log the first 25 miles over the spring, summer, and early fall on your own, with your family, or even with a group of friends.

After everyone has logged their 25 miles, we will join together in Southwest Harbor on MDI Marathon Race Day to run the Final Mile together and cross the Official Finish Line in front of cheering spectators and be awarded race medals!

Kids Run Registration

2017 registration is not yet open.

  • What is included in the $25 registration fee:

  • Printable training log with both historic and fun mile-by-mile course descriptions to help keep them inspired and running! 
  • Printable certificates of achievement!
  • Kids Run shirt! - limited to the first 70 who sign up, sizes not guaranteed after October 1st
  • Personalized Kids Run bib number! - must be signed up by September 1st
  • Kids Run CRUSHER CLAW finisher's medal!
  • Mount Desert Nursery School is the official beneficiary!

pre-race check-in & Bib numbers ➤kids run

All children need to be checked in prior to the Kids Run start time. You may check your child in at the Pre-Race Health & Fitness Expo (Friday: 3PM-8PM, Saturday 10AM-5PM) or on Sunday morning at 8:30AM in Southwest Harbor before the Kids Run.

Kids Run Race Day Information

327 Main Street, Southwest Harbor - Maine

The Kids Run Final Mile will start and finish at the Run MDI Official Finish Line on Main Street in Southwest Harbor, in front of Pemetic School.

Race Day Parking ➤kids run

Do not park on Main Street! The race course for all events (marathon, half, relay and kids run) follows south Route 102 and finishes at 327 Main Street in front of Pemetic School.

Parking will be prohibited on Main Street to the intersection with Clark Point Road.

  • Parking is available in the following locations:
  • Seal Cove Shops
  • Clark Point Road
  • South Main Street (beyond the road closure)

There is no time limit for the Kids Run. However, if you find that you're the caboose, we suggest moving safely to the side walk to allow the faster Half-Marathon runners to pass you as they approach the Finish Line.

Medallions ➤kids run

All Kids Run finishers will receive a CRUSHER CLAW medal after they complete the race. (Kids need to be wearing their bib number during the race to receive their award.)

Finishing & Post-Race ➤kids run

After Kids Run participants have crossed the finish line and received their medal they should exit the barricaded finish chute. (The Half-Marathoners will begin finishing at approximately 9:35AM and we need this area clear.)

We invite all Kids Run finishers and their families to cheer on the Marathon, Half, & Relay finishers! (Please do this from outside the barricaded finish chute. Only race staff, volunteers, and runners who have just finished should be in this area.)

Final Mile Rules of the road ➤kids run

The Southwest Harbor Police Department will be providing an escort for the Kids Run.

The Kids Run course will remain open to local and race-related traffic. (Traffic is very light.) However, if you find that you are unable to keep up with the group, please move safely to the sidewalk.

The Half-Marathoners will start finishing at approximately 9:35AM. If you are still completing the Kids Run it is extra important o move to the side walk as these runners will be approaching the finish line at top speed.

A note to Parents

One of the many goals of the Mount Desert Island Marathon is to motivate and inspire everyone in our community, including children. Our Kids Run will help motivate and challenge the next generation to get-up, get-out, and RUN! Running is fun, and self-esteem building and boasts a number of health benefits for children, teens, and people of all ages.

Our program is geared primarily for children in Kindergarten thru 8th Grade, but all children that wish to participate are welcome. Each participant will run and log 25 miles over the Spring, Summer, and Fall. Kids anywhere can participate!

After your child is signed up you will receive a confirmation email with additional information including a link to a printable running log, and links for incremental mileage certificates.

Finally, race morning, Sunday, October 16th all children who have completed their first 25 miles will join together in Southwest Harbor and run the Final Mile together. They will get to experience the thrill of crossing the official MDI Marathon Finish Line where they will be greeted by cheering spectators and awarded medals!

We encourage all kids, both those that live here, and those who will be coming from away to cheer on family members who are participating in race weekend events, to sign up today!

All kids must be signed up by September 1st to allow time to order shirts and medals for everyone.



The Mount Desert Island Marathon is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. Entry fees, including optional meal add-ons, coaching programs, club memberships, etc. are non-refundable. No exceptions. (See transfer & deferral information on FAQ Page.) This policy applies to all entrants and is in effect whether your plans change, you are injured, or have an unexpected family emergency / business emergency / medical emergency / etc. This means once you have paid your entry fee you will not receive a refund if you cannot participate, or if the course has to be changed, or if the event is cancelled due to weather, natural disaster or other unforeseen circumstances. The race committee reserves the right to accept or reject any entries.
